Shaun’s Beer Journey: Troegs Nugget Nectar

[Courtney’s note: Here’s another guest post from Shaun as he attempts to cross off ten rare, extraordinary beers off of his to-drink list. Follow his journey on its home page, but for now, enjoy!]

It’s almost Spring and the hops are coming. Beer Run seems to announce a rare release just for hopheads every other day. Last week, we had Nugget Nectar, Bell’s Hopslam, and Dogfish Head 120 minute. And because Nugget Nectar is on my Beer Journey, I made a point to pick up a six-pack.

Troegs claims that Nugget Nectar “will take hopheads to nirvana.” And while I was in hop-heaven, the reach seems a bit more expansive to me. The hop flavor was not so pronounced that fans of less hoppy beers would be turned off. Courtney (not usually a fan of pungent hops) enjoyed every sip.* This is all to say that Nugget Nectar is much more balanced than I expected.

The first sip lets you know this is an amber. The crystal malts bring a soft caramel flavor, that then washes away as the hops bring strong citrus notes. The sweetness of the caramel balances what would probably otherwise be an extreme citrus explosion. As the citrus subsides, the finish is all piny hops. And the finish lasts forever. I’m not sure if it’s the stickiness of the hops or what, but Nugget Nectar puts three Rs in lingerrr. I loved it.

Josh Bernstein, thanks again for another great recommendation.

Oh, and while we’re talking about beer, how about this guy?

Courtney’s note: Two of my three sips. Minus the one where I had cinnamon Orbit gum in my mouth.
