End-of-November Foodie News

Help. Shaun’s singing Christmas carols, and it’s not even December.

[Update, 11:30AM: The FERN {Food and Environment Reporting Network} launched on the 24th, and will serve as a dedicated resource for “investigative reporting on food, agriculture and environmental health.” The non-profit’s goal is to provide information on the food industry, investigate and expose abuses and corruption, and serve as a platform for speakers and writers who normally wouldn’t be heard. I’m pleased to add them to {what’s left of} my RSS feeds! Go here, then RSS.]

1. Apparently, the phrase “Eat More,” followed by any noun completely unrelated to fast food, is not yours to use. I hate to burst Chick-fil-A’s bubble, but these shirts are everywhere, and when I almost bought one a few months ago [from not this guy’s website], I didn’t think to myself, “Hey, I totally associate this shirt with Chick-fil-A!” So why are they singling out this poor guy among the many producers of this [awesome] shirt for suit? Your guess is as good as mine.

2. Check out Mark Bittman’s 25 signs of hope for the wrecked and mutilated food industry and our poor health. I just purchased the new release of #12 and I can’t wait to start it, anda huge thank you to #23, too!

3. Although I don’t necessarily find the term “foodie” to be a pejorative one, I like the idea of “culinarian.” I could get down with that, as soon as I can get Microsoft Word and WordPress to stop underlining it in red.

4. It seems we all get kind of trashy over the holidays, and not in the way you’re thinking, gross. Here are some ways to keep it under control.

5. Earlier, Grub Street Philadelphia wrote on why Anthony Bourdain won’t film a Philly episode [citing something along the lines of a lack of “indigenous foods”]. Now, it looks like he might, based on rumors and a series of tweets between him and Marc Vetri. Awesome people tweeting back and forth with awesome people? I want in.
