Braaaiiinnnssss…and Burgers?

Happy Dia de los Muertos! The perfect day to sport black/purple/orange shoes and talk about…Iowa? Well, more appropriately, Iowa and zombies.

I’ve never been to Iowa, and I don’t know much about it except for what I read on this blog and what I hear from two of my closest friends who call Iowa their home [hi Lauren and Colin!]. Last night, Colin informed me of the Des Moines, Iowa establishment that’s capitalizing on our cultural obsession with zombies [for other examples, see this, this, and this] – the Zombie Burger Bar & Drink Lab.

and brains.

WHAT? Let’s take a look at a few notables on this menu:

  • Fried brussels sprouts
  • “Undead Elvis” burger – with peanut butter, fried bananas, bacon and cheese
  • “Juan of the Dead” burger – with a green chili croquette, spicy cheese and chipotle mayo
  • Deep-fried hot dogs
  • Deep-fried cherry pie

Is there nothing that can’t be deep-fried in Iowa? Any of the burgers can be made with a chicken patty, veggie patty, burger, or portobello, and come in a single, double-tap, or triple size. What is more, there are spiked milkshakes.

The Des Moines Register called the place “monstrously popular” [ha. ha.]. You can check out their review here, which is quite positive overall. W.E. Moranville wrote, “[I]f you’re going to go for fat food, you might as well have some fun with it.” Here, here.

Doing some research on this restaurant made me realize that Downtown Des Moines has a lot to offer, including a farmer’s market, lots of shopping, a botanical garden, and fine dining. Sounds pretty exciting! Regardless, it might be worth a trip just to check out Zombie Burger… preferably during the Iowa State Fair, when I can wash down my zombie-fied veggie burger and “zombie nachos” with a deep-fried stick of butter. Yes, that exists. C&L, I hope you’re ready for visitors!
