Wavves at the Jefferson [9/26/2011]

Sandwiched in between Richmond’s oddly-named “Black Girls” and the loudest band I have ever seen live, “F*cked Up,” Wavves played a straightforward, hour-long surf rock set in a [to my surprise] nearly empty theater. What once was a  two-man group with California native Nathan Williams and formr drummer Ryan Ulsh has grown into a four-piece band, supplemented by the bassist Stephen Pope [formerly in Jay Reatard’s band] and Jacob Cooper [formerly Mae Shi].

Nathan Williams has a chilling voice, at some times reminiscent of Billie Jo Armstrong [although I’m sure that’s not intentional] and at other times oddly beautiful. His songwriting may not bring critics to their knees, but the songs are fast, fun, and loud.

King of the Beach (2010)

They played this (of course), a ton of songs off of their new EP, the “Life Sux EP,” and ended with mine and Shaun’s favorite songs, respectively: Green Eyes and No Hope Kids.

A few weeks back after the Hold Steady/Justin Townes Earle/Cinnamon Band show at the Jefferson, the Daily Progress wrote that the Jefferson’s post-renovation sound system is ill-equipped to handle loud bands, leaving the venue better suited to acoustic and lighter sets. After this show, I have to say I agree. Drums drowned out guitars drowned out vocals, and often things just sounded like noise, to the point where almost the entire staff had to wear earplugs [I regret not having any, myself]. Now, a lot of the tunes were supposed to be noisy. In fact, it often added to Wavves’ lo-fi aesthetic that permeates many of their records. Sometimes, though, it was just a little too much. All in all this was a fun show, but my ears will be paying for it for a few days.
