Wedding 101: The Engagement Photos

Aww. (c) Kelly Kollar Photography

Don’t be fooled: Engagement photos are the most awkward thing you will do in your life.

Outtakes exist. (c) Kelly Kollar Photography

Our advice?

1. Bring a flask.

2. Have an Awesome Photographer Friend.

These things make the photo shoot much less uncomfortable for all involved. Our A.P.F. is my college roommate, 1L roommate and Maid of Honor, Kelly Kollar. Kelly and I met one fated freshman year move-in day when we were randomly selected by the administration at New York University to live on the same floor. The rest, as they say, is history. Extremely well-documented history, because Kelly brings her camera everywhere and takes pictures of everything. This comes in handy in situations such as (1) coming back from studying abroad and realizing all of your photos kind of stink; (2) coming back from spring break in Jamaica and realizing all of your photos are gone.

Kelly studied photography at NYU and produced some wonderful photojournalism work. She now works for a NY magazine and moonlights as a wedding photographer in NYC [and is willing to travel!]. Even her dog has been featured in spreads in Martha Stewart’s magazine. [Side note: I accidentally bought one of the aforementioned photojournalism pieces at a charity auction when I was supposed to be the one “upping the price.” It’s hanging on my wall to this day].

Anyway, Kelly graciously offered her talents for our engagement shoot. She drew the line there, however, because she plans to have a tall glass of tequila in hand at all times at the actual wedding, which would make being the professional photographer quite difficult.

The photos were taken in the Washington Mews by our old stomping ground, Washington Square Park.

Shaun and I are the most awkward couple on the planet, and did not comprehend “act natural.” What does this even mean? How do I “naturally” pose in a dress such that I am simultaneously kissing my significant other, flashing my left ring finger and not flashing what’s under my dress?

The answer: a flask of whiskey.

Nope, don't know this guy. (c) KKP

After we all partook in the flask, Shaun and I treated kelly to dinner at one of her [and my!] favorite restaurants by our old apartment off of Tompkins Square as a “thank-you.”

A few weeks later we had this wonderful post devoted to us and a CD full of images for our parents to immediately hang all over their respective houses. They truly are beautiful pictures and we LOVE Kelly for them!

Fun was had by all.

My advice? Check out Kelly’s awesome work. Then, hire her. My other advice? Let your fiance wear a flannel in the middle of June in NYC for the engagement shoot or you will never live it down. At the very least, get the photos done, they really are great to look back on.
