Our Wedding 101

My intention over the coming months is to chronicle how two students planned a DIY wedding on a too-small budget. I hope that I can offer advice as helpful as the advice I’ve been given from friends who have recently married [best piece of advice so far: buy your own tablecloths on Amazon – savings of $11/tablecloth really adds up]. For now, I’ll give you “Shaun and Courtney’s Wedding 101” to bring you up to speed with our status. Although I won’t divulge the exact date, I’ll do my best to support our vendors to the fullest in these posts.

Wedding Date: Summer 2012.

Wedding City: Charlottesville, VA.

Wedding Venue: The Jefferson Theater.

What we’ve done so far (I’ll devote a post to each of these in the future):

  • Taken Engagement Photos.
  • Chosen our Bridal Party.
  • Booked our Venue.
  • Selected our DJ.
  • Selected our Photographer.
  • Selected our Caterer.
  • Selected our Cake and Cake Vendor.
  • Selected our Officiant.
  • Selected our Colors.
  • Sent out Save-the-Dates.
  • Booked our Hotel Blocks.
  • Chosen a Florist.
What we still need to do:
  • Dress Ourselves & the Bridal Party.
  • Create Invitations.
  • Set up the Bar.
  • Book a Honeymoon.
  • Choose our Wedding Rings.
  • A ton more.
I also hope to write the novella “Well, That’s Odd: Or, What I Learned from Other People’s Weddings,” to show how you can use others’ special days to plan your own. Perhaps Bravo will pick it up and turn it into a series so I’ll never have to work again.
It may seem like we’ve done a lot so far – don’t be fooled, we also have puppy training, a year of school and the bar exam to fit in with the wedding planning – so our current plan is to knock out as much on the front end as we can.
Stay tuned for individual wedding posts!
